FRIDA KAHLO EXHIBIT AT THE SFMOMA

This picture is appropriate since it's not a picture of me trying to look photogenic. Like Kahlo, it's me in my true form. uuuuhhhhh...... look at the pretty colors... This is one of my favorites. It shows a tenacity in her painting; very detailed. It also shows a knowledge of her current events tied into her past. It goes to show us how in her time Hitler was just another world leader, and not the monster we know him by today. It's great to see that connection as she uses mesoamerican symbology to create her art; It shows the elements of the belief system of spiritual realm, supernatural realm, and the earthly realm. I see this painting similar to that of the north wall at San Bartolo. In this case, connecting the central baby with the four sections of the painting. Together they form a quincunx (the four directions form a central axis). It links the heavens, the underworld, and the surface of the earth. This painting shows the sun and moon; a common theme in the mesoamerican way of life. It's also reminiscent of the Olmec piece we've been discussing this semester; Las Limas figure, where the youth is holding a rain deity. In this case, the figure of the universe, holds the figure of earth (Mexico), whom holds Kahlo, whom holds Rivera. Thus using the Las Limas figure, one could deduce that the ones being held have a hierarchical position. Diego, a genius, is viewed as the the highest deity in this paining. This picture of her made me laugh. I'm not ashamed to say, but the stereotype must comes from somewhere, Mexican's love to drink. It seems like she's having a good old time. She was a person too. Like Ben Franklin said "Beer is proof that God loves us." Here, in Nina Lucha Maria, we see a moon and sun theme again. In fact we can see in her painting the pyramid of the sun and the pyramid of the moon of Teotihuacan in the background. This positioning of her legs reminds me of cave painting in Oxtotitlan; the way she sits like the Olmec lord with the bird costume. The cape she is wearing is remeniscent of the the wings of the bird. Kind of like the figure on Stela II, Kaminaljuyu. Her name means Fight Girl Maria. She probably represents the obvious; Woman's fight for rights in Mexico while still maintaining their identity and rich cultural past.

Wow I can't believe you got to take those pictures. I almost got kicked out of the exhibit because they saw me take a picture with my cell phone. I liked your interpretations of her pieces. Her paintings were really interesting.

I also liked the personal photographs of Frida at the exhibit. It allows you to relate to her at a more personal level. We did not only got to know her art but a little bit more about her by her personal photos even some of the letters she wrote to Diego.
